The Hungarian-owned part of the port of Trieste will soon start operations, which will offer completely new opportunities for Hungarian exporting companies in terms of flexibility and speed of their exports, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in Rome on Friday.
Following talks with Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, Péter Szijjártó stressed that the Hungarian port section will provide a whole new dimension to the Hungarian economy, which is heavily dependent on export performance.
“A significant part of our exports are destined for the Far East, mainly by sea. Up to now, Hungarian export companies have been exposed to the capacity of the ports in our area, as to when they could access the transport facilities,” the Foreign Minister pointed out.
The fact that Trieste will have its own Hungarian-owned port section will give Hungarian companies a completely new opportunity in terms of flexibility and speed of their exports to the East,”
he added.
Szijjártó welcomed the start of the coastal wall construction and dredging works on February 20. He pointed out that the Italian government is also providing support for the investment, worth some HUF 80 billion (EUR 200 million).
“We have already received part of this financial support and we have now agreed that the Italian government will provide further financial support next year,” he stated. He also said that the attitude of the local authorities in granting the license was very fair.
Therefore, practically within two years, Hungarian export companies will be able to export their products to the East through a Hungarian-owned port here in Trieste,”
he concluded.
Szijjártó also mentioned that Italy is Hungary’s sixth most important trading partner with an annual turnover of EUR 13-14 billion, and Italian companies are the eleventh largest investor community in Hungary.
He added that last year, the number of tourists visiting Hungary from Italy was close to half a million, and the number of overnight stays was well over a million. “This is a big increase, a big record in our tourism relations,” he emphasized.
Finally, the minister said that the government was counting on significant Italian corporate participation in the construction of gas power plants, a key source of energy for Hungary, which would add a new dimension to bilateral economic cooperation.
