A Hungarian police patrol checked the occupants of a passenger car with Lithuanian license plates near the Austrian-Hungarian border crossing Harka on Thursday at 1:45 pm when they alerted their colleagues. Shortly after, police officers noticed a small truck in the municipality driving at high speed towards the border and alerted their colleagues at the border.
A policeman tried to stop the car with a regular signal, whereupon the driver accelerated and drove towards the policeman. He was able to jump away in time from the onrushing small truck, whereupon his colleague fired several warning shots. The smuggler then crossed the border, where he stopped after a few hundred meters.
On the Austrian side, the Burgenland police picked up the migrants, who are now seeking asylum, and are being questioned as witnesses to the event.
