With the support of Rosatom, an expedition to the Arctic will be launched on August 13 with the participation of young foreigners, including a Hungarian student. The project, called the “Icebreaker of Knowledge,” involves young people from host Russia and participants from several countries, including Hungary, Világgazdaság reports.
The icebreaker “50 Let Pobedy” (50 Years of Victory), the flagship of the nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet operated by Rosatom, will take students and young professionals from 14 countries to the Arctic.
The “Icebreaker of Knowledge” project aims to promote science and nuclear technologies, identify and support talented children, develop their skills and provide career guidance.
The project’s Arctic expedition was internationalized this year to mark the 65th anniversary of the Russian nuclear icebreaker fleet. The young expedition members will enjoy a wide range of interesting activities, including scientific lectures, experiments and master classes, as well as learning about the Arctic’s unique flora and fauna and the developments on the North Sea shipping route. The expedition participants will fly their country’s flag when they reach the Pole.
Captain Ruslan Sasov will lead the icebreaker on the Murmansk – Franz Josef Land, North Pole route.
The ship is expected to reach the North Pole on August 17 and return to the port of Murmansk on August 22.
The Russian students have been joined by young people from Bangladesh, Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, Cameroon, China, Kyrgyzstan, Hungary, Mongolia, Armenia, Tunisia, South Africa, Armenia, Tunisia, Uzbekistan and Mongolia.
Hungary is represented by Levente Varga, a student at the Budapest secondary school named after the great Hungarian traveler and explorer Sándor Kőrösi Csoma.
His reports can be followed on social media before and during the trip, as long as the conditions near the coast allow.
Russia is the only country in the world with a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers. The infrastructure for the North Sea shipping route has been operated and developed by Rosatom since 2018 and is one of the company’s priority areas of activity.
