Exclusive Exhibition of 19th-20th Century Hungarian Painting Opens in Ankara

An exclusive exhibition of 19th-20th century Hungarian painting has opened in Ankara, Türkiye as part of the Hungarian-Turkish Cultural Year, the Ministry of Culture and Innovation announced.

The exhibition, created in partnership with the Kovács Gábor Art Collection in the spectacular Ankara State Art and Sculpture Museum, was opened at an event held on the occasion of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union by Viktor Mátis, Hungary’s ambassador to Türkiye, Gábor Csaba, deputy state secretary for cultural diplomacy, and Burhan Kayatürk, chairman of the Committee on European Union Harmonization of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye.

In his speech, Gábor Csaba, stressing the role of culture in bilateral relations, informed about the events of the Cultural Year and its mutual popularity so far, as well as about the general objectives of the Hungarian EU Presidency. Viktor Mátis informed the participants about the Presidency’s objectives in Türkiye, while Burhan Kayatürk praised the intensity of bilateral relations and its parliamentary aspects.

Gábor Kovács, the owner of the collection, highlighted that

the exhibition, which will be open for two months, will guide visitors through the 19th-20th centuries with a selection of masterpieces by the most outstanding Hungarian painters,

including Mihály Munkácsy, Károly Markó, Miklós Barabás, László Mednyánszky, Pál Szinyei Merse, László Paál, Károly Ferenczy, János Vaszary, István Csók, Károly Kernstok, Béla Iványi-Grünwald, and many others. The outstanding genres of the Hungarian Reform Era (19th century), portraiture, romantic landscape painting, realism and finally naturalism, are presented: the art material with its special atmosphere spans Hungarian history and art from the mid-1800s to the 1910s.

The exhibition opening on Sunday evening was followed by a gala evening of the Budapest Operetta Theater, also organized by the Hungarian-Turkish Cultural Year, to welcome the EU Presidency with a gala performance presenting the centenary of the genre unique to Hungary (Hungarikum). The event was attended by representatives of the Turkish and Hungarian Ministries of Culture, heads of diplomatic corps serving in Türkiye, lecturers and students of the Department of Hungarology at the Ankara University, and Hungarians from Ankara.

The Hungarian-Turkish Cultural Year is organized by the governments of Hungary and Türkiye to mark the centenary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. It started on December 18, 2023, last year and will end exactly one year later. During this period, Hungary will organize more than 100 cultural and scientific programs in 15 cities in Türkiye.
