“Europe’s weakness is not due to global circumstances, but to leadership”

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.04.19.

The Prime Minister’s political director told journalists in Brussels on Thursday at the closing day of the informal EU summit, that despite the news from the front line, more and more European leaders are taking a pro-war stance and want to provide Ukraine with more weapons and military aid. As Europe’s leaders continue to take a pro-war stance, our first and most important priority remains to guarantee Hungary’s peace and security, he said.

Hungary remains alone in its pro-peace stance and there is no military solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Balázs Orbán underlined. “The sooner we can sit down at the negotiating table, the more lives we can save and the sooner we can minimize the risk of a third world war,” he added. Until this strategic shift in direction is made by other countries, the first and most important priority will remain to guarantee Hungary’s peace and security, the politician noted. “We see this as achievable by staying out of any war preparations, by continuing to say no to arms transfers and by not allowing any Hungarian participation in decisions concerning EU military assistance.

In line with Hungarian national priorities, we will not participate in cooperation that does not serve the interests of our country. We will ensure that Hungary cannot in any way appear to the world or to the belligerents as if it were a party to the conflict,”

he stressed.

The next chance is the European Parliament elections on June 9, he said, because if there is a new European Parliament with a new institutional leadership in Europe, there will be more room for pro-peace ideas and proposals in Brussels. The politician hopes that the new European Parliament will be able to put pressure on the new composition of the European Commission not to side with Ukraine against European farmers, but to protect them from Ukrainian grain.

Magyar Nemzet reports that on the second day of the meeting, Member State leaders discussed the issue of competitiveness on the basis of a 150-page report. “We basically welcome the fact that the issue of European competitiveness is on the table. The most serious consequence of the last five years of mismanagement in Brussels is that Europe’s competitiveness has also radically deteriorated and is in significant decline compared to five years ago,” the politician commented on the agenda.

Balázs Orbán emphasized:

The fact is that European competitiveness is weak not because global circumstances are forcing us to be so, but because we ourselves, the Brussels leadership, have put us in this position, have adopted rules, have created bureaucratic obstacles,

for example, have imposed a green transition that is explicitly against the interests of European farmers and European businesses.” He added that this negative trend must be halted at all costs, and therefore the implementation of the competitiveness turnaround will be one of the top priorities of the Hungarian EU Council Presidency, which will last for half a year from July 1.
