László Palkovics, CEO of N7 Holding National Defense Industrial Innovation Ltd., announced the groundbreaking of the 155 mm artillery ammunition production building at the Várpalota Defense Industrial Complex, heralded as Europe’s most modern artillery ammunition production plant, honvedelem.hu reports.
“I am proud to announce the groundbreaking of the production building, marking a significant milestone in Europe’s modern artillery ammunition production,” stated Mr. Palkovics. This plant represents a significant step towards domestic production of large-caliber artillery ammunition by 2025.
Várpalota (western Hungary) was selected due to its prior experience in explosives production, chemical capacity, proximity to the University of Pannonia, and the Bakony military shooting range, ideal for testing ammunition.
The project involves constructing NATO-standard bunkers, a phosphate treatment and painting building, and other facilities. Production of 30mm ammunition for Lynx infantry fighting vehicles may start by the year’s end, while 155mm ammunition production is slated for late 2025.
Rene Gansauge, CEO of Rheinmetall’s weapons and ammunition division, praised Hungary’s investment in military technology, underscoring their successful partnership. Mayor Márta Campanari-Talabér hailed the project as transformative for the city, creating job opportunities and driving development.
This initiative represents Hungary’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and fostering collaboration with leading international firms like Rheinmetall.
