There is still no agreement between the European Commission and the Hungarian government on the contentious issues, leaving the Erasmus international student program in a difficult state for the country’s model-changing universities. In principle, applications are being assessed today, but no contract can be signed for the time being in the absence of a major agreement, reports Világgazdaság.
The European Commission and the Hungarian government continue to disagree on the problems concerning various European funds. This is especially true for the Erasmus program, on which the Hungarian side has just said it will not be up to them if there is no agreement.
A month ago, Tibor Navracsics, Minister for Regional Development, stated in a letter that Brussel’s rule of law procedure is not based on facts, but on political opinion.
The European Commission has not responded for a month to the text of standard sent to Brussels by the Hungarian government
emphasized the statement by the press department of the Ministry of Regional Development.
“The document contains a precise Hungarian response to all the new demands of Brussels regarding the conflict of interest of public trusts and the protection of the EU’s financial interests, that have been formulated and amended numerous times so far.”
Speaking at the Commission’s briefing on Wednesday, spokesman Balázs Ujvári said
negotiations between the parties are intense, but agreement is far from being reached.
So the question remains as to what will happen to the participation of Hungarian model-switching universities in the international exchange program, whose current applications are supposed to be judged these days by the Tempus Public Foundation. However, whichever institution wins, no contract can be signed until the dispute with the European Commission is settled.
The Ministry of Regional Development’s recent statement summarized the views on the topic, saying that:
If Brussels does not have a month to respond to the Hungarian normative text, it can only mean that the European Commission is stalling for time,
hence if there is no Erasmus agreement, it will not be the Hungarian government’s fault.
