Eugene Katchalov, a professional poker player born in Kyiv but now living in New York, posted on his Twitter page about the kind gestures from people in Budapest.
According to the posts, Katchalov and his wife are in Budapest, or at least they were in the Hungarian capital two days ago when the poker player tweeted:
Went out for breakfast in a nearby cafe in Budapest. Another customer overheard us speaking Ukrainian and on her way out paid for our whole meal even as we were telling her we didn’t need it. She said she knew and it’s not about the money, but simply a gesture. My wife cried…”
He also tweeted that a man gave them his business card in case they needed any help. The waiter also did not want to accept a tip, and after Katchalov did not want to take it back, the waiter said he would donate it to a local fund collecting humanitarian supplies for Ukraine.
