EU Spokesman: Ukraine’s Oil Block “Not a Problem”

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.26.

There is no issue for either Hungary or Slovakia regarding Ukraine’s imposition of oil supply restrictions on the Russian company Lukoil, stated European Commission spokesman Olof Gill.

In response to a question, the spokesman mentioned that the letter from the Hungarian and Slovak governments concerning the restriction of oil supplies to Ukraine had been received on Monday by Valdis Dombrovskis, the Commissioner for Trade Policy. The European Commission is analyzing the letter and gathering further information, and will make a decision once all the facts and relevant information are available.

He emphasized that only the European Commission has the authority to make a decision on the matter.

Olof Gill also noted that, according to the information available to the Commission, the supply restriction would have no direct impact on the EU’s oil supply. “There is also no immediate problem for the two countries concerned,” he added, since both countries have a 90-day reserve in line with EU regulations. The European Commission is now seeking a solution that is acceptable to all parties, the Mr. Gill said.

Regarding whether Hungary could unilaterally cut off its electricity supply to Ukraine in response to Ukraine’s oil supply restrictions without prior consultation with the European Commission, the spokesman stated that there is currently no adequate information available on such a scenario.

Fact

As Hungary Today earlier reported, after Ukraine imposed sanctions against Lukoil, blocking the Friendship oil pipeline, Hungary is collaborating with Russia to restore oil supplies. Despite the EU not banning pipeline crude imports from Russia, Ukraine’s actions have halted deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized efforts to resume oil flow and criticized Ukraine’s decision as a threat to energy security. Hungary seeks EU consultation, highlighting Ukraine’s violation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
