EU Sanctions Cause High Energy Prices and Inflation, State Secretary Argues

According to State Secretary Tamás Menczer, the Turk Stream pipeline guarantees Hungary’s gas supplies, but the “failed EU sanctions” have put Europe in an increasingly difficult situation.

Gas prices have been soaring in Europe since Russia’s Gazprom tweeted on Wednesday that it could halt supplies to Europe through Ukraine.

“If this really happens, Russian gas will be coming to Europe solely through the Turk Stream, as delivery through the Nord Stream had been stopped before,” Tamás Menczer, State Secretary at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade reacted on Facebook, adding that Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary are on the southern route.

According to Menczer, who is responsible for bilateral relations, despite the growing energy crisis in Europe, Russian gas keeps coming to Hungary and it cannot happen that families will not be able to heat their homes, and jobs put at risk because of gas shortages.

“Gas is transported unhindered through the Turkish Stream pipeline. Hungary’s energy security and gas supply have been and will be protected,” Menczer said. The State Secretary pointed out that energy is not an ideological issue, it is a matter of reality. He stressed that Hungary does and will have enough gas, but the situation is getting more difficult every day. “This is not what Brussels promised- the sanctions policy has failed,” Menczer stated, adding that without the pointless sanctions on energy, energy prices and inflation would be immediately halved.
