EU Must Act on Ukrainian Conscription Abuses and Migration Crisis, Says State Secretary

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.07.23.

The European Union must take action against the forced deportations in Ukraine and the brutal beating of József Sebestyén, Bence Rétvári said ahead of Tuesday’s meeting of the European Union’s Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) in Copenhagen. The Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior emphasized that at the meeting, which will focus on migration, he will continue to argue that the southern border fence is the solution and that Hungary will not accept illegal migrants.

In a video posted on his social media page, Bence Rétvári said that he had two objectives for the meeting of the Council of the European Union. Firstly, it is important that the interior ministers are aware that Hungarian citizen József Sebestyén was allegedly fatally assaulted during forced conscription in Ukraine. The European Union must take action in this matter because it involves a Hungarian, thus an EU citizen.

The Hungarian Government has taken action, and the European Union must do the same,”

he said.

The other important issue is migration. The meeting aims to gather innovative proposals for dealing with migration. “We have a proven proposal we have advocated for 10 years—the southern border fence—and that all procedures should be carried out outside the EU, not within the EU,” said Rétvári, indicating that he would say this at the meeting.

He added that an increasing number of people agree with the Hungarian Government, but unfortunately the Brussels leadership and the European Commission continue to ignore these proposals. Today, they will continue to push for distribution according to quotas so that as many countries as possible will take in as many migrants as possible.

He added that the issue of quotas is on the agenda, because in recent months only nine of the 27 Member States have responded to the European Commission’s call to accept migrants, while the other countries have not even responded.

“Hungary has not submitted such a plan, nor will it do so; we will not accept illegal migrants,” Rétvári stated emphatically.
