At Tuesday’s plenary session of the European Parliament, MEPs debated preparations for the EU-China summit scheduled for the end of July. Enikő Győri, Fidesz MEP and economic spokesperson for the Patriots for Europe Group, warned in her speech that broader relations are needed to strengthen the European economy.

“In order for the European economy to recover and improve its competitiveness, it is essential that we establish connections with as many countries as possible. Connectivity can make us stronger. To achieve this, however, we must give up the ideological struggle of dividing the world into good and bad and only trading with the good,” said the Hungarian MEP.

She believes that the July EU-China summit could serve as a kind of restart. “We need to realize that fruitful cooperation is not limited to countries with similar political systems.

The United States, that has declared China its main enemy, has already been able to reach agreement with the Asian power on certain issues. Let us be capable of doing the same.”

Enikő Győri also emphasized the importance of strategic independence: “Let us reduce our dependence, stand on more than one leg, and of course, let us not be naive. Let us make China interested in relations with us. Let us look at what is good for European companies and what creates jobs. Negotiations can only be conducted in a language of mutual respect.”
