England International Aaron Ramsdale Hails Zoltán Gera as Premier League Icon

Hungary Today 2024.11.14.

An interesting survey has been carried out at Southampton FC in the English Premier League, writes Magyar Nemzet. The club’s players took to the team’ official TikTok channel to say who they think is the best player of all time in the English top flight. The club’s five-time England international Aaron Ramsdale – a huge West Brom fan – named Hungarian Zoltán Gera.

The 45-year-old head coach of Kecskeméti TE, Zoltán Gera, has received a huge accolade. It seems that he is not only an icon of Ferencváros TC, but has not been forgotten by fans and players in England.

Gera played for eleven years in the Premier League and in the Championship when West Bromwich Albion FC were relegated from the top flight.

On July 30, 2004, for a huge sum by Hungarian standards at the time of GBP 1.5 million, Gera signed for Birmingham City FC for 3+1 years, making his first start for the club on August 25, 2004, scoring his first England goal in the third minute against Tottenham Hotspur FC. He was the only player to appear in all 38 games for his club, scoring a total of six goals, and was named in Soccernet.com‘s ‘dream team’ at the end of the season.

The following year he underwent hernia surgery and West Brom was largely without Gera, and were relegated from the Premier League. The Hungarian stayed on and led the team back into the top league by the beginning of the summer of 2008, before transferring to Fulham FC.

Gera was one of the team’s best for three years and led Fulham to the Europa League final – scoring two goals against Juventus and one against Hamburg – where they eventually lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid, while Gera provided an assist in the final.

He returned to West Brom at the end of the 2010/11 season, where he was repeatedly one of the team’s best when not injured.

Well, the Hungarian seems to have left a deep mark on West Brom fans, including five-time England international Aaron Ramsdale. The Southampton goalkeeper took part in a poll in which his club asked the players of the team who they thought was the best ever player in the Premier League.

Ramsdale did not mince his words and immediately nominated Zoltán Gera as the best Premier League player of all time.
