Energy Sanctions Hit Europe Harder Than Russia, State Secretary Says

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.10.06.

State Secretary Zoltán Kovács emphasized the dangers of energy sanctions and urged people to take part in the planned national consultation.

A change of direction is needed in European politics because it is clear that energy sanctions are destroying the EU economy, Zoltán Kovács, the State Secretary for International Communications and Relations said in a Facebook video on Wednesday.

He recalled that for a long time after the outbreak of the war, imposing energy sanctions was not on the agenda, but then in June everything suddenly changed and Brussels pushed through a decision to ban and sanction Russian oil and oil derivatives.

“We said from the beginning that any energy sanctions would be the equivalent of dropping a nuclear bomb on both the Hungarian and the European economy. In the case of Hungary alone – which has no seaports and can only receive gas and oil by pipeline – it is clear that such a transition would only be feasible after many years and hundreds of billions of forints of investment,” he said.

He added that this is why,” after a long struggle and hard fights, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán managed to obtain an exemption from the sanctions on Russian oil”.

“We can now see that these sanctions hurt Europe much more than Russia, because Russia’s revenues have even increased, while energy prices and inflation in the Eurozone have gone out of control. If enough of us take a stand and speak out, we will succeed in changing these decisions,” Zoltán Kovács said, referring to the upcoming national consultation about the sanctions.
