Economy Minister Meets with Representatives of Major Battery Companies in South Korea

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.06.14.
Samsung SDI is one of the most important South Korean investors in Hungary.

Minister Márton Nagy and a delegation from the Ministry for National Economy, as well as Péter Kaderják, CEO of the Hungarian Battery Association, held talks with representatives of South Korea’s largest green energy and high-tech battery companies, Samsung SDI, EcoPro BM, GS Energy, SungEel Hitech, and KH Energy.

According to the statement from the ministry, during the talks in South Korea, the parties reviewed the international and European situation of the battery industry for electric transport, the challenges facing the sector, and the potential of South Korean-Hungarian economic cooperation. One of the main topics of the discussions was battery processing. In order to learn about South Korean best practices in the field of processing and recycling, the delegation members also visited one of the most advanced recycling industrial parks.

The Hungarian government’s goal is to make the battery recycling industry an integral part of the green, circular economy in the Hungarian economy.

Márton Nagy, Minister for National Economy, stressed that used batteries should be treated in an environmentally friendly way and the valuable raw materials embedded in them should be used in the most optimal way. “Green energy- and raw material-efficient battery processing is also a priority in order to meet the environmental targets set in the European Union’s new battery directive. Therefore, Hungary is interested in the increasingly intensive South Korean-Hungarian exchange of experience,” the statement said.

The government’s strategic goal is to form a bridge between East and West, i.e. to link Eastern and Western capital and high-tech technology in Hungary,”

The Minister stressed that electric cars are the future, which is unthinkable without a competitive battery industry.

Therefore, the government aims to make Hungary one of the five largest producers of electric batteries in the world.

Three of the ten largest electric battery manufacturers in the world are currently in South Korea, hence cooperation between the two countries is ideal.

Nagy added that “we want to win the future, and we will win the future, and the Hungarian-South Korean Economic Innovation Partnership Program (EIPP), which is primarily aimed at the development of e-mobility and carbon neutral transport, is helping us to do so, under the coordination of the Ministry for National Economy.” The Minister also said that during its EU Presidency, Hungary will develop a new Community-level action plan for the further promotion of electro-mobility that will propose measures to provide the necessary infrastructure and services, in addition to promoting the purchase of electric vehicles.
