Drones Spray More and More Crops

Hungary Today 2025.03.26.

A fungicide can now be applied by drones in Hungary, and the authority has permitted the field use of such a product in sunflower crops. This brings the number of products that can be applied by drone to three, reported Világgazdaság.

After the manufacturer verified the effectiveness of the fungicide (Amistar Sun 325 SC) through trials conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) and confirmed its environmental and human health safety through the required drift studies, the authority granted its approval.

The product can be applied in sunflower crops using drone spraying, allowing growers to protect against Alternaria leaf and stem spot, a fungi that causes spotted lesions on the leaves and stems of sunflowers. In addition to the exclusive use of authorized products, strict adherence to occupational safety regulations is also crucial. The unmanned aerial vehicle may fly at a maximum height of 3 meters above the crop. According to the regulations, the maximum permitted flight speed of the drone is 15 kilometers per hour, the required protection distance from the treated area is 50 meters, and the maximum allowed wind speed is 2 meters per second.

In order to be legally allowed to operate, the drone used must be type-certified and the drone pilot must be registered by Nébih.

Spraying with a drone is still considered aerial crop protection and may therefore only be carried out under the supervision of a phytosanitary practitioner, and a permit must be obtained from the plant and soil protection department of the county government office before starting.

Before the work begins, warning signs must be placed along the edge of the treated area and the adjacent protective strip with the following inscription: ‘Spraying by unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) in this area, entry to the area is dangerous and prohibited!’
