Drilling of the Fifth Natural Gas Well in Southeastern Hungary Begins

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.04.25.

The drilling of the fifth well at the Nyékpuszta deposit (southeastern Hungary, Békés County) began over the weekend, the Ministry of Energy announced on Wednesday.

The first well at the hydrocarbon field discovered in the region of Sarkad has been in operation since February last year. Two more were drilled in 2023, while another well drilled a year ago, went into production last winter.

So far, the four active wells in Békés County have produced 67 million cubic meters of natural gas and 82,000 cubic meters of condensate,

the ministry wrote in a social media post.

The post also mentions that the MVM Group (Hungarian power company) launched a new natural gas exploration and production investment in the Berettyóújfalu area (eastern Hungary) at the end of 2023. Production is expected to start here during the summer. The company plans to drill additional wells at the two sites, they added.

“The government is strengthening Hungary’s energy sovereignty and the security of supply of domestic consumers by increasing the use of domestically available resources. In the last heating season, the country consumed about 2.2 billion cubic meters less natural gas than in 2021/2022,” the ministry said. They also pointed out that improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of geothermal heat could reduce consumption. As a balancing energy source for weather-dependent renewables, natural gas has an important role to play in a successful green transition, they concluded.
