Donations Raised for American-Hungarian Hurricane Victims

Hungary Today 2024.10.21.

Hungarians in Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina are making a large-scale collection to help Hungarians affected by the natural disasters of the past three weeks, local diaspora leaders said.

Zsuzsi Kozma, president of the Carolina Hungarian Group, told MTI that several families contacted them after the hurricane and floods at the end of September. Some had their houses and cars rendered unusable by falling trees, she added. She said there were also Hungarian hurricane victims in the town of Asheville, the hardest hit by the North Carolina floods.

The head of a group of Hungarians in North and South Carolina said their organization had donated $3,000 to the victims, which had been roughly doubled by private donations of smaller amounts. Kozma said that there are still Hungarians in the two states who are without internet access, making it difficult to stay in touch, but that electricity has been restored.

Hurricane Helene struck the United States at the end of September, affecting North and South Carolina, causing severe flooding, mainly in the southern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Hurricane Milton, which arrived two weeks later, also caused massive damage and loss of life.

More than a dozen organizations of the Hungarian community in Florida, organized by the Hungarian Community Church, have launched a collection called Hurricane Relief, for which donations are expected by the end of October. According to the appeal, several Florida families have completely lost their homes as a result of the natural disasters.

The two hurricanes, Helene and Milton, hit the US mainland off the west coast of Florida, in the part of the country where larger Hungarian communities live, Honorary Consul Piros Pazaurek, founder and director of the Hungarian Hub, told MTI. The Hungarian community leader also said that Hungarians in Sarasota and Daytona were the hardest hit by Hurricane Milton, both in the form of water and wind damage.
