The traditional closing gala of the New York Young Republican Club was held on Saturday night in the spirit of next year’s U.S. elections, co-organized by Hungary and featuring a speech by Donald Trump.

The gala in Manhattan was attended by around 1,000 guests, including many conservative public figures, politicians, business and opinion leaders.

Former President Donald Trump, who is running again for the Republican presidential nomination, gave the keynote speech.

In his one-hour speech, Trump said, among other things, that the 2024 presidential election will be an even more important one for the United States than usual. He noted that his immigration policy was the factor that helped him to power in 2016, and stressed that the U.S. now faces a much deeper migration crisis than it did then.

Szabolcs Takács, Ambassador of Hungary in the United States, said that during Donald Trump’s presidency, the U.S. treated Hungary as a valuable partner and friend, which the Hungarian side will not forget. He added that

under the Trump administration, U.S. policy has achieved results such as the Abraham Accords and the joint result of Hungarian-American defense cooperation.

Fact

The Abraham Accords are bilateral agreements on Arab–Israeli normalization signed between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain on September 15, 2020. On September 15, 2020, the official signing ceremony for the first iteration of the Abraham Accords was hosted by the Trump administration at the White House. As part of the dual agreements, both the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain recognized Israel’s sovereignty, enabling the establishment of full diplomatic relations.

Gavin Wax, President of the New York Young Republican Club, spoke about the organization’s work, plans and growth, and how it was the first Republican organization in the U.S. to endorse Donald Trump when he announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

Republican Congressman Paul Gosar told Hungarian media that the Young Republican Club is a powerful example of how young generations can contribute to politics. “It is important to know how young people think, because they are the future,” he said, praising Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his policies in Hungary, noting that there have been recent examples of right-wing turnarounds in other countries, such as Argentina and the Netherlands.

Ernő Schaller-Baross, who also works as a ministerial commissioner in addition to his work as an MEP, said that this gala evening was also an opportunity for European and American conservatives to meet, showing that they can work together internationally and that their cooperation has a future.

Harald Vilimsky, an Austrian Conservative MEP, also told the public media that it is not so special that he is meeting Hungarian political figures at this event, because Hungarians are all over the world and are involved in the reorganization of Western thinking, aiming to give states the right to decide on their own culture again and to be able to defend Western values. The Hungarian Prime Minister is playing a key role in this work, he added.

The gala evening in New York featured a performance by Liszt Ferenc Prize-winning Hungarian violinist Zoltán Mága as well.
