Over the weekend it became official that the captain of the Hungarian national football team, Dominik Szoboszlai, has joined Liverpool. The 22-year-old footballer has reportedly been bought by the English Premier League side for €70 million, making him by far the most expensive Hungarian footballer to be contracted.
Dominik Szoboszlai, who previously played for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, has reportedly signed for Liverpool to a five-year deal. In his first interview with the club, the midfielder said that he is very happy and cannot wait for the adventure to begin. “[A] really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good,” he said.

Szoboszlai’s jersey number is 8, previously worn by the legendary Liverpool player Steven Gerrard. On the Hungarian athlete’s arm is a quote from Gerrard: “Talent is a divine blessing, but without incredible will and humility, it is worth nothing.”

Liverpool head coach, Jürgen Klopp, said after the signing that the team is very excited about the arrival of Szoboszlai, adding that there is no pressure on him. “Dominik is still a very young player. He has so much development ahead of him and this means it makes sense for us all to be patient and to give him the time and space to allow his talent to come through within our team,” underlined Klopp.

The transfer of the Hungarian footballer has also been discussed by foreign newspapers, with the BBC pointing out that he has previously been called “just as talented as Erling Haaland” by a former manager of his. Manchester City star Haaland was a teammate of Szoboszlai’s at Salzburg before signing to England, where he has now won a Premier League and a Champions League title with the team. The two of them are still in a contact, and Szoboszlai has mentioned that Haaland has already recommended a place for him to live, so they might become neighbors in the future.
