As the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács (fought on August 26, 1526 in southern Hungary) approaches, researchers from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the University of Pécs have made a groundbreaking discovery about the historic battleground.

Led by Pál Fodor and Norbert Pap, the research team has uncovered evidence of two separate battles at the site, reports Index. This new discovery is challenging long-held beliefs shaped by decades of communist-era propaganda.

The research program, launched in February 2018 with a budget of HUF 120M (EUR 305.2K) under the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ Cooperation Program for Excellence, aimed to reconstruct the historical and geographical context of the Battle of Mohács.

The battle marked a significant turning point in Hungarian history as the forces of the Ottoman Empire decisively defeated the Hungarian army, leading to centuries of Ottoman influence in the region.

Initial research findings revealed that the battle site contained artifacts not only from 1526 but also from a later, lesser-known anti-Turkish battle in 1687, sparking debates about the historical narrative.

Pál Fodor, a Széchenyi Prize-winning historian, emphasized the importance of reassessing the traditional understanding of the battle, stating, “the old, self-punishing image of Hungary must be corrected.” He argues that the commonly held view of Hungarian incompetence and unpreparedness during the battle is not accurate when considered in the broader context of European military history.

Norbert Pap highlighted the ideological distortions propagated during the Kádár regime (1957-1989), explaining that “what has finally emerged, and what is the basis of public knowledge, is largely ideologically based distortion, and sometimes outright lies.”

This new research aims to correct these historical inaccuracies and provide a more factual account of the events surrounding the Battle of Mohács. By publishing their findings internationally, the research team hopes to offer a more nuanced understanding of this pivotal moment in Hungarian and European history.

The Battle of Mohács, fought on August 29, 1526, was a decisive confrontation between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The Hungarian forces suffered a catastrophic defeat, leading to the collapse of the medieval Hungarian state and the onset of Ottoman rule over much of Hungary for over 150 years. This battle is often seen as a turning point that marked the beginning of a long period of foreign domination and significant socio-political changes in Central Europe.
