The Budapest Public Utility Company (BKM) collects and recycles the hundreds of thousands of Christmas trees that become unnecessary after the holidays in an environmentally friendly way, BKM Budapest Public Utilities Nonprofit Plc. FKF Waste Management Division stated on Thursday.
The task is a serious logistical challenge, as it is estimated that 500-600,000 fir trees are dumped on the streets of the capital every year.
Residents can place the trees at any of the more than 250 designated collection points or deposit them in a clearly visible place next to household waste bins.
FKF is asking people in Budapest not to dispose of trees in public areas in such a way as to endanger pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle traffic, the safety of others, or the tidiness of the capital.
An average of 12 ‘pinewood trucks,’ specialized machines with a special body used for waste collection, will transport the Christmas trees from the designated collection points every day after Epiphany (January 6). The trees are collected from residential properties by garbage trucks, with separate vehicles also helping out if necessary, they added.
After being chopped and mixed with municipal waste, the trees are suitable for environmentally-sound thermal incineration under controlled industrial conditions.
This will provide tens of thousands of households in Budapest with environmentally friendly district heating and electricity through high-efficiency cogeneration, the statement noted.
