Hungary and Poland, once united by a deep and historic friendship, now face growing diplomatic strains. This evolving relationship reflects a dramatic shift from their previously warm alliance to current conflicts and political disagreements, writes Károly Kövesdi in his article published on the news site Ma7.sk.

Historically, the Hungarian-Polish friendship is celebrated for its deep roots and positive interactions, dating back to centuries. In particular, the bonds between the two nations were exemplified by mutual support during times of adversity and shared conservative values.

This alliance, forged through centuries of cooperation, has been a cornerstone of their diplomatic and cultural ties.

Today, however, relations between Hungary and Poland have deteriorated, particularly with the onset of the Russo-Ukrainian war and the political shifts under Poland’s new government led by Donald Tusk. According to the author he Polish administration’s actions have significantly strained relations, especially as it pursues policies sharply contrasting with Hungary’s stance on Russia and other geopolitical issues.

Key issues include Poland’s criticism of Hungary’s approach to Russia and its apparent hypocrisy, as Poland continues to engage with Russian businesses despite its public stance.

As Mr. Kövesdi writes, there were a notable diplomatic incident where Poland falsely accused Hungary of impeding oil supplies, further exacerbating tensions.

Despite these challenges, the deep historical ties and past positive interactions between Hungary and Poland remain significant. The long-standing friendship is a testament to their mutual respect and cooperation, even amidst current disagreements, the article emphasizes.

While the present diplomatic landscape is fraught with tension, the historical friendship between the two countries underscore a positive foundation. The enduring legacy of their alliance suggests that, despite the current friction, the essence of their relationship remains rooted in shared values and past solidarity.
