Defense Forces Play Critical Role In Flood Protection Efforts

The country is facing significant challenges as flood protection efforts intensify across the country, particularly in key regions along the Danube.

Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted the extensive mobilization of the Hungarian military, who are actively engaged in safeguarding vulnerable areas like the areas around the city of Vác (town north from Budapest) with a task force of 156 reservists.

As Hungary Today earlier reported, flood protection has entered its most challenging phase. While the flood’s crest is crucial, the aftermath, marked by weakened embankments and risks of debris flows and run-offs, presents even greater difficulties.

The slow ebb of the Danube, influenced by melting snow in Austria, means the pressure on embankments will last longer, requiring constant vigilance.

In Szigetköz (north-western Hungary), officials have noted bulging and gushing along embankments, but rapid intervention has ensured stability. The peak water level at Nagybajcs (western Hungary) is expected to hit around 855 cm, with protection efforts working effectively to manage the situation.

In the Danube Bend (between Visegrád and Esztergom, north from Budapest amongst the Danube), key areas like Vác have seen major protection measures, with 100% of embankments completed, though pressure on these structures remains.

The situation in Budapest is under control, with flood defenses built up to 900 cm, surpassing the city’s highest recorded water level.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán provided reassurance at a recent press conference, noting that Hungary’s flood protection systems are functioning effectively. He confirmed that by mid-next week, the flood wave is expected to leave the country. Mr. Orbán also praised Hungary’s preparedness, noting the deployment of over 5,800 professionals and nearly 16,000 volunteers.

The Hungarian Defense Forces have played a critical role in these efforts, mobilizing not only manual labor but also air and amphibious assets, writes honvedelem.hu. The Minister of Defense underscored the importance of the reservists.

Flood protection measures are in full force, with both the government and volunteer forces working tirelessly to mitigate risks.
