“I have convened a meeting of the Defense Council due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. The effects of the Iran-Israel war will reach Europe: we must prepare for protests and an increased terrorist threat,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on social media.
The announcement came after the United States entered the Israel-Iran war on Israel’s side, striking key Iranian nuclear facilities. U.S. President Donald Trump announced early Sunday morning that the United States had carried out a successful attack on Iran’s three most important nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.
“Although the conflict is geographically far from us, it poses three threats that we must face: first, the threat of terrorism,” said the Prime Minister. Viktor Orbán emphasized that we have protected ourselves from migration, which is why Hungary is not a country of immigrants, and so we will now also be able to defend ourselves effectively against the threat of terrorism.
We must pay attention to migration pressure: after every conflict in the Middle East, pressure increases on our southern borders, and the Minister of the Interior must pay attention to this, as I instructed him today,”
the Prime Minister said.
Orbán warned that we must face up to further increases in energy prices, as “this is a serious threat, therefore we must now lift the regulations and bans on Russian energy in Brussels. The negative impact of the Iranian-Israeli war on energy sources is enough trouble for us.”
Following the attack, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, asked Hungarians staying in countries in the region to register for consular protection. The Minister also asked that no one travel to the region in the current situation.
