The international community must do its utmost to avoid an escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, and the most important thing is to prevent the outbreak of war between states, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Luxembourg on Monday.
Commenting on the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the minister said that there is a strong division among Member States over the Israeli crisis. He stressed that the government’s position is clear on this issue, too, stating that it is completely unacceptable and inexplicable that thousands of rockets are fired at a country, causing the deaths and suffering of thousands of people and the taking of hostages. “However, we also believe that the international community must also make efforts to avoid escalation.” He warned that
the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East could create a situation that could poison life in the Middle East and the wider region for years or even decades to come.”
The minister expressed concern about the “frightening” pictures taken on the streets of some Western European cities. “There is a very serious concern about the modern-day antisemitism that has emerged in Western European countries. The fact that in various cities in Western Europe people are allowed to demonstrate in support of terrorist organizations is also a cause for serious concern,” he stressed. “This is impossible in Hungary. In Hungary, it is not possible to organize demonstrations in support of terrorist organizations,” he pointed out.
Prior to the foreign minister’s statements, Máté Kocsis announced that
a political declaration condemning terrorism and standing up for its victims would be submitted to Parliament this week.
In the declaration, parliament condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas against Israel and expresses its sympathy to those who have suffered the attacks and lost relatives and loved ones. “Hungary condemns the terrorists and stands by the victims. Victims of terrorism have the right to defend themselves and to take the necessary steps to prevent a repetition of the attack. Hungary recognizes Israel’s right to self-defense. However, the war against terrorists must be avoided from becoming a war between states. The peace process based on the Abraham Accords, represented a historic breakthrough in the settlement of relations between Israel and the Arab countries, must be maintained,” the declaration says.
In the document, parliament draws attention to the fact that the large numbers of people, including
terrorists, members of Hamas and other terrorist organizations, who are allowed to enter Europe without being checked, represent a direct and serious risk to the security of European citizens and the continent. This is a direct consequence of an irresponsible and misguided migration policy.
“The Council of the European Union has previously adopted a common position on terrorist organizations involved in terrorist acts, which Hungary considers to be the guiding principle. Our country has always fought terrorism and has treated members of these organizations as terrorists even when it did not allow them to enter its territory. Our country protects its borders against illegal immigration with physical and legal barriers, thus keeping away the terrorist threat associated with migration and guaranteeing the safety of Hungarian citizens. We expect the European Union to support this position by all means,” quoted Máté Kocsis from the declaration to be submitted.
