Zsolt Németh, Chairman of the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said that the issue of the ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO was put before Parliament in mid-September last year. Viktor Orbán had earlier promised that “we will not be the last to approve Sweden’s accession” reports Index.
On 13 July, Zsolt Németh, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly, was a guest of Inforádió. The Fidesz founder member spoke on the program about, among other things, when the Hungarian Parliament may decide on Sweden’s accession to NATO.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that he would submit the ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO to the Ankara legislature at the beginning of the autumn session of parliament, and if the bill is passed, it would leave Hungary as the only NATO member that has not yet accepted Stockholm’s accession to the alliance.
Zsolt Németh does not see the need to call an extraordinary meeting on this issue at this time. He recalled that the Turkish National Assembly has also given itself until October to decide on this matter. He then quoted the Turkish President as saying that he wanted to put the issue of Sweden’s accession to NATO as a top priority on the agenda of the session after 1 October, i.e. the beginning of the Turkish Parliament each year.
In an earlier statement, Péter Szijjártó said that
the decision on the ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership is entirely in the hands of the members of parliament, and that the government is ready, having submitted the proposal long ago.
On Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade posted that the government’s position remains unchanged and clear: they support Swedish accession to NATO, which is why they submitted the proposal to Parliament many months ago.
It is now only a technical matter to complete the ratification process.
