Damaged Hungarian Monument to Be Displayed in Ukrainian Museum

Hungary Today 2023.05.17.

A permanent exhibition on the history of Mukachevo (Munkács) is being set up in the castle, which will also include the statue of a Hungarian mythical bird, that was controversially removed from its original stand within the castle. This was announced by the city’s mayor Andriy Baloga on his Telegram channel on Monday.

According to the plans, the exhibition of the city’s history will be opened in several rooms, covering a total of 150 square metres. At the moment, consultations are being held with experts on the exhibition’s material, Andriy Baloga wrote.

According to local sources, the Municipality of Mukachevo plans to exhibit the Turul monument, which was illegally sawed off the bastion of the Mukachevo castle last October, as part of this exhibition. It is reported that the work was badly damaged as a result of its unprofessional removal, reported Kárpáti Igaz Szó.

On 13 October, the Munkachevo City Council decided to remove the Turul statue and at the same time to display the small Ukrainian state emblem, the so-called trizub. The Turul, which commemorated the Hungarian conquest of Hungary, was removed shortly afterwards on the same day. A week and a half later, the Ukrainian coat of arms was unveiled on the obelisk of the Turul. Since then, nothing has been known about the whereabouts and exact condition of the Turul.

In March this year, Imre Pákh said in a statement that he had sued the Municipal Council of Mukachevo for ordering the “illegal and barbaric demolition” of the Turul statue. According to Imre Pákh, who was involved in the statue’s installation in 2008, no local lawyer would take the case, so he hired a Ukrainian lawyer practicing hundreds of kilometers from Mukachevo to handle the case.
