Csaba Varga has reached the summit of Nanga Parbat – the Facebook page of Hazajáró (Homecomer) announced on Sunday. The mountaineer from Nagyvárad (Oradea, Romania, formerly part of Hungary) climbed the mountain, part of the Himalayan Range, without the use of oxygen tanks or high-altitude load carriers.
According to the post, Csaba Varga reached the top of the 8,126-meter-high Pakistani mountain shortly after 12:00 am Central European Time on Sunday. He then started descending towards Camp 3, with Hazajáró’s Facebook page noting that reaching the summit was only half of the climb, and that he still needs to get to the camp safely.
Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world, is one of the most dangerous of the fourteen eight-thousanders.
This was the sixth eight-thousander Varga climbed without the use of oxygen or load carriers, making him the mountaineer who has reached the most peaks over 8,000 meters out of all Hungarian climbers alive today.
Fact
Among Hungarians, Zsolt Erőss (1968 – 2013) was the most successful high-altitude mountaineer, summitting 10 of the 14 eight-thousanders. He was also the first Hungarian citizen to have climbed Mount Everest. After successfully scaling Kangchenjunga on May 20, 2013, he went missing in descent.
This year, another Hungarian climber, Szilárd Suhajda, attempted to conquer Mount Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen and sherpas. He climbed to about 8,795 meters, according to GPS data, but disappeared at the bottom of the Hillary Steps. Although the most experienced sherpas went in search of him, his body was not found.
