Magnificent Cranes Flock to the Hortobágy Plains

Hungary Today 2024.09.10.

With the onset of autumn, cranes are arriving in increasing numbers on the Hortobágy Puszta (World Heritage Site, cultural landscape in eastern Hungary). The crane migration is a spectacular natural event, and the Hortobágy National Park Authority is now opening applications for guided tours to observe it, Turizmus.com reports.

The Hortobágy National Park Directorate will organize guided tours to see the daily dusk-related movement of tens of thousands of cranes, the crane migration, from the end of September to the beginning of November.

Tours to observe the cranes migrating to their roosts at night have been announced under the title “Four wheels on the cranes’ trail.” The program will start with a film screening of “Crane Bird in the Sky” (“Darumadár fenn az égen”) at the Visitor Center of Hortobágy National Park, followed by a short briefing and then a convoy of guests in their own cars to the field site.

Tours depart from September 28 to November 3 in the early afternoon.

Registration and further information is available on the Hortobágy National Park Directorate website.

Fact

Cranes are native to forested, steppe and wetland areas of Eurasia, migrating to northern Africa and southern Asia to winter. The cranes migrating towards their wintering grounds usually arrive in the Hortobágy with the onset of autumn. During this time, tens of thousands of cranes can be found in the shallow water areas of the Hortobágy National Park.
