Comprehensive Change Needed Due to Corruption in Brussels, Says Hungarian MEP

Hungary Today 2023.05.11.

The European Parliament elections next year will be an opportunity to make a comprehensive change in the face of corruption in Brussels, as the vote will be an opportunity to support a new beginning, Balázs Hidvéghi, Fidesz MEP, said in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

Speaking to Hungarian journalists during a break in the EP’s plenary session, Balázs Hidvéghi underlined that Hungary supports all anti-corruption measures taken by the EU.

However, he considers it absurd that the European Commission is proposing another anti-corruption regulation with sanctions for non-EU countries, while the body itself has still not uncovered the most serious internal corruption case in the EU’s history.

He pointed out that in addition to the corruption scandal involving the European Parliament in early December, the European Commission has recently been exposed for “fundamentally unacceptable ways of operating.” Despite this, there has been no internal investigation or confrontation in Brussels, he stressed.

The politician said that

while anti-corruption action is always important, Hungary believes that the European Parliament should first clarify its internal rules, and abide by and respect them.”

Only after that should new legislation on corruption and the possibility of sanctioning external partners be put on the agenda, Hidvéghi added.

Next spring, there will be European Parliament elections, which could be a chance to change the way the EU is run, and as Hidvéghi said, the vote could be a chance to support a new start. A similar vision was outlined in a recent interview with Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga, who said that with a possible right-wing majority in the next European Parliament, a new era could perhaps begin. According to her, a new European Commission could appear in which bureaucracy and NGOs can no longer override the democratic process, where the leaders of the member states will set the direction of the EU, not a European administration that follows its own political agenda.
