Commissioner Launches Inquiry into Child Safety in Schools

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.02.28.

To prevent future abuses of children’s rights, the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, Ákos Kozma, has launched an ex-officio comprehensive inquiry into public education institutions.

In a statement sent to MTI, Ákos Kozma said that in recent weeks society has been shaken by “previously unimaginable and deeply outrageous news. We can feel that our children are being used for unqualified purposes by people who should be providing them with the greatest security.

It is unacceptable that those whose fundamental task, or even vocation, is to promote the emotional, moral and intellectual development of children should abuse the means and position of education,

he added.

There is a growing perception that in some instances teachers were too lenient in tolerating worrying behavior among their ranks. Photo: Pexels

The Commissioner recalled that the Fundamental Law declares that Hungary shall take special measures to protect children and that every child has the right to the protection and care necessary for his or her proper physical, mental and moral development. He added that the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights must pay special attention to the protection of children’s rights in his activities, in particular by conducting ex officio proceedings. As part of this duty, he launched a comprehensive investigation in public education institutions to prevent future abuses of children’s rights.
As he wrote, parents, children and teachers concerned can request the procedure in case of violation or threat of violation of children’s rights electronically at panasz@ajbh.hu.
