According to statistics, almost 66,500 vehicles with only electric drive have already received a green official registration plate in Hungary, tripling since January 2022, the Ministry of Energy announced on its Facebook page on Monday.
They added that one in four of the country’s most climate-friendly road vehicles were registered in 2024. The ministry expects the number of pure electric cars to rise to 120,000 by 2026.
According to the road traffic register, 1,951 pure electric cars were registered in Hungary in October. More green-plate vehicles were on the roads in March 2024 (2,108) and in June and September this year (both 2,072). Last month was therefore the third best month ever for the uptake of green cars in the country.
The future belongs to green energy. Hungary is leading the way in its production and storage in homes, factories, and cars. The spread of environment-friendly and quiet cars will make communities more livable.
Modern cars not only help reduce air and noise pollution from road transport, they are also cheaper to run and maintain,
the post emphasized.
The ministry pointed out that the government is promoting electromobility with almost HUF 60 billion (EUR 146 million) in two programs. Businesses can apply for HUF 30 billion (EUR 73 million) in non-refundable subsidies to buy pure electric cars, vans, and minibuses. Over half of the available funds have already been found in contracts already signed, and a tenth has been paid to the winners.
Another tender, launched last week, provides an incentive of HUF 28 billion (EUR 68 million) to tackle the white spots in the rural charging network. Six out of ten vehicles with green plates were put on the road outside the capital. The program will support the creation of over 100 new charging stations in the coming years, making electric cars more convenient and attractive in underserved areas outside Budapest.
It is also thanks to the mass emergence of green cars that emissions from transport, one of the biggest polluters, started to fall in Hungary last year after a steady increase in previous years,
the ministry underlined.
