Chinese Battery Factory CATL to Start Production in Debrecen Next Year

Hungary Today 2024.11.07.

Battery cell production is scheduled to start in 2025 at CATL’s newly built factory in Debrecen (eastern Hungary), the announcement was made at the Hungarian Battery Week, Dehir.hu reports.

As reported by Hungary Today, the Hungarian Battery Week takes place in Budapest between November 6-8. The event is attended by the most important representatives of the industry, including experts from the Chinese battery factory CATL, which built its second European production unit in Debrecen. The main objective of the Budapest event is to provide a public forum to discuss professional issues related to the improvement of the battery and electromobility sector in Hungary and Europe.

To achieve energy sovereignty and sustainability goals,

we not only need batteries that enable the transition to electric transport, but also the development of technologies for industrial energy storage and the introduction of new business models,”

said Jason Chen, CATL’s General Manager for European Operations, at the event.

He added that CATL is a global leader in battery manufacturing and energy storage solutions, and has made significant progress in carbon neutral manufacturing. The company operates nine carbon neutral factories worldwide and was the only battery industry player to have three of its factories selected by the World Economic Forum as members of the Global Lighthouse Network, recognizing the most advanced factories using Industry 4.0 technology.

CATL announced in 2022 that it would build its second European battery factory in Hungary, in the Southern Economic Zone of Debrecen. The first phase of the battery cell factory has now been built and the building services engineering and electrical installations are underway.

As reported by Dehir.hu,

the event also revealed that cell production is scheduled to start in 2025 at the Debrecen facility.

The news site points out that the company is committed to Hungary and Debrecen for the long term, and therefore considers it key to actively participate in workforce training and support institutions at all levels of education. CATL Debrecen signed an agreement with the Debrecen Vocational Training Center in February 2024 to launch dual training, and in June, it also agreed on strategic cooperation with the University of Miskolc (eastern Hungary), then with the University of Debrecen in October.
