Although chimney cakes, also known as ‘horn cakes’ (in Hungarian kürtőskalács), are an indispensable “must” of summers, festivals, fairs, and zoo walks, there are not many places in the city where you can eat this glazed and crunchy delicacy every day of the year. Sweet Teddy Bear’s Chimney Cake Confectionery (Édes Mackó Kürtőskalács Cukrászda) is brilliant if only because as well as the classic flavors, you will find cakes sprinkled with pistachios and dried raspberries, stuffed, and cream filled.

If you fancy a sweet chimney cake, you can get one relatively quickly in one of the metro subways, but it is worth hopping on the subway and walking all the way to Széchenyi Baths, where you will find what you have always wanted but did not necessarily know it- real chimney cake heaven.

If you had your fill of more traditional variants (1,800 HUF – 5 euros), then it is time for the delicacies! The “kürtősbon” (2,400-2,800 Ft – 6-8 euros), for example, is a stuffed version of the chimney cake, where the dough is filled with pistachios, chocolate, peach or plum jam, then baked. Everyone can decide for themselves which flavor they prefer.

At Édes Mackó Kürtőskalács Cukrászda, the only limit to the creations is the imagination and the size of one’s wallet, but they always make sure that they keep with tradition, even if they do add a little modern twist.
