Fact

The commemoration of Hungary’s first king St. Stephen, also the day of the founding of Hungary and “the day of the new bread” is on 20 August. The celebrations have included the presentation of medals and awards since the 1960’s.

With the change of regime, there was a serious debate in parliament about which national holiday (15 March, 20 August, 23 October) should be the main holiday of the Hungarian state, until the parliament finally decided on 20 August (this was provided for in Article VIII of Act No. 1991). This is also a priority in the Fundamental Law promulgated in 2011. Nowadays, the harvest festival motif has also become part of the content of the holiday: the country’s bread and the cake of the country are chosen for the occasion. One important new feature of the last decade has been the presentation of the Order of St Stephen. It was founded by Maria Theresa, but was abolished in 1946. The new Constitution re-established the Order, which has been presented on the feast day since 2013.
