Challenges Lie Ahead of Hungary’s Digital Development

On Friday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received the CEO of Deutsche Telekom, Timotheus Höttges, at his office at the Carmelite Monastery. The parties reviewed the prospects and challenges of Hungary’s digital development and the joint results achieved in this area.

According to a press release issued on the meeting, Viktor Orbán and Timotheus Höttges agreed that digitalization is a key factor in maintaining the competitiveness of Hungary and Europe, and that they continue to see each other as strategic partners in this area. Encouraging investment and supporting infrastructure development is essential to achieve the 2030 goals of the Digital Decade.

Timotheus Höttges underlined that Magyar Telekom is playing an important role in the digital development of the country and in making the benefits and opportunities of the digital world available to citizens and businesses.

Between 2014 and 2022, Magyar Telekom invested more than HUF 1,000 billion in Hungary, of which around HUF 800 billion was spent on fixed and mobile network development.

In addition to building infrastructure, Telekom is working with the Hungarian government to support the integration of digital technology, providing innovative solutions and educational platforms to encourage the digital development of SMEs, large enterprises, and industry.

Deutsche Telekom’s CEO also pointed out that

telecoms is a highly investment-intensive industry, and consumers’ hunger for data continues to grow.

In Europe, data traffic is growing at an annual rate of around 25-30%, with global content providers playing a major role, but they are not currently contributing to network development.

At the meeting, Timotheus Höttges stressed Magyar Telekom’s strategic role in the Deutsche Telekom Group, underlining its long-term commitment to increasing the performance, productivity and competitiveness of the Hungarian economy.
