Central Statistical Office: 6,284 Children Born, 9,501 People Died in May

In May 2024, Hungary saw 6,284 births and 9,501 deaths, reflecting an 11 percent decrease in births and a 6.2 percent decrease in deaths compared to May 2023. Marriages increased by 1.2 percent, with 5,510 couples tying the knot.

Over the first five months of 2024, 31,788 babies were born, representing an 8.4 percent drop from the same period in 2023. The number of live births declined by 9.1 percent in January-March, 3.4 percent in April, and 11 percent in May.

The total fertility rate fell to 1.36 from 1.48 the previous year.

During the same period, 52,983 deaths were recorded, a 4.5 percent decrease from the previous year. The death rate showed a 1.8 percent increase in January, a 0.2 percent increase in February, and an 8.4 percent decrease from March to May. The natural population decrease was 21,195, up 1.9 percent from 20,791 in the first five months of 2023. Marriages saw a 7.3 percent rise, with 16,266 couples getting married, 1,101 more than the previous year. There were more marriages in January-February and April-May, while March saw a 1.9 percent decrease compared to March 2023.

The birth and death rates per 1,000 inhabitants were 8.0 and 13.3, respectively.

These rates were slightly lower than those from January-May 2023. The infant mortality rate was 4.0 per 1,000 live births, slightly higher than the previous year. The marriage rate was 4.1 per 1,000 inhabitants, 0.3 higher than a year earlier.

From June 2023 to May 2024, 82,313 children were born, a 7.8 percent decrease compared to the previous 12 months. In the same period, 125,668 people died, a 5 percent decrease. There were 51,240 marriages, a 9.5 percent decrease from the previous 12 months. These figures were reported by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH).
