Chinese author Su Tong is visiting the Hungarian capital at the invitation of the Chinese Cultural Center in Budapest and the Contemporary Chinese Book Club, and will take part in a film roundtable discussion on May 26.
On May 26 at 5 p.m., Su Tong will be the guest of honor at the Uránia National Film Theater for a roundtable discussion featuring filmmakers and sinologists as part of the Imázsia Chinese Film Week, focusing on Chinese film and literature.
Similarly, on May 26, the film adaptation of his novella of the same name, Powder, will be screened, followed by a panel discussion with the author, the film’s director, and cinematographer.
Su Tong’s novel River Town won the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2009, and in 2011, he was nominated for the International Man Booker Prize. He has also won the Mao Dun Literary Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in contemporary Chinese literature. Su Tong is not only a prolific writer but also a great storyteller. Several of his works have been made into films, the best known being The Red Lantern, based on his novella Women in the Red Chamber, which won the Silver Lion at Venice, the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and was nominated for an Oscar in the same category.
