Caritas Hungary’s Goodwill Ambassador Anita Herczegh, spouse of former Head of State János Áder, accompanied the Caritas Hungary’s Medical Mission to Velyki Berehy (Nagybereg) in Transcarpathia, Ukraine to provide preventive health screenings for nearly 200 adults and children. The screenings were carried out by volunteer doctors and nurses at the Reformed Lyceum.
The event aimed to offer healthcare, raise awareness about health maintenance, and send a message of support to the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia, emphasizing that Hungary has not abandoned them. Volunteers from Caritas Hungary played a central role, with Gábor Écsy, national director of the organization, expressing hope for the continuation of their efforts.
Anita Herczegh noted the crucial impact of these screenings, especially in addressing the health challenges faced by disadvantaged communities in Transcarpathia, exacerbated by the war.
The lack of healthcare access, particularly for children, has led to long-term disadvantages for many.
Since 2017, the medical mission has screened over 11,000 people across 28 municipalities in Transcarpathia, South Ossetia, and Transylvania. They have also distributed 1,300 pairs of glasses and 1,100 orthotics to children, in addition to initiating further treatments and surgeries. The Caritas Hungary’s Medical Mission continues its preventive work throughout the year, significantly improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations.
