Cat-and-Mouse Game Between the Police and Speedsters Heats Up

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.03.25.

Speeding remains one of the main causes of accidents. The police will continue to use all means to eliminate violations and protect pedestrians, because Budapest’s roads are not a racetrack, stated the Head of the Traffic Police Department of the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) in Budapest on Monday.

Lieutenant-colonel Krisztián Léránt said that while more than 3,800 serious and fatal road accidents occurred in the capital in 2019, this number has decreased to about 2,900 by 2024. The lieutenant-colonel said that they primarily focused on speeding and speed- and traffic cameras were installed in cooperation with the local government of Budapest.

The police are now also recording speeders from moving vehicles,

he added. Thanks to the measures and inspections, the almost 53,000 speeding violations in November were reduced to less than half by February, explained Krisztián Léránt, adding that these data are all based on recordings from measuring devices installed by the capital.

He also spoke about the strict action being taken against participants in illegal acceleration races: in the recent period, proceedings have been initiated against 202 people, 93 of whom committed an infraction by modifying their vehicles without a permit. The inspections will continue because Budapest’s public roads are not racetracks, he stated.

DUI is another leading cause of road accidents. The police are taking strict action, subjecting suspicious drivers to a breathalyzer test anywhere, at any time, in Budapest.

At the press conference, BRFK staff presented a video of a recent speeding incident on Szentendrei Road, in which a Lamborghini passenger car was traveling at 140 kilometers per hour, almost twice the permitted speed of 70 kilometers per hour. BRFK spokesperson Soma Csécsi said about the incident that the offending driver received a fine of 140,000 forints (352 euros).

The spokesperson also confirmed that inspections are continuing, and also asked for the cooperation of all road users.
