Chinese automotive giant BYD has signed a cooperation agreement with six vocational training centers in the Southern Great Plain region and the University of Szeged. The company is building its first European factory in the southern Hungarian city with production planned to start as soon as this autumn.
Veronika Varga-Bajusz, State Secretary for Higher Education, Vocational and Adult Education, and Youth, said at the event that the government is developing the education system, both universities and vocational training centers, so that they can become the driving force of each region and provide high-quality, marketable training for students. Young people completing their education strengthen the economy of the region and provide a supply of high-quality labor for businesses, the politician pointed out.
In the agreement,
BYD Auto Hungary Kft., the University of Szeged and the region’s vocational training centers set out the steps that will enable young people participating in the training to build a career at the company in the future,
the state secretary emphasized.

Gábor Gan, director of BYD’s presidential office in Hungary, said that the agreement lays the foundation for long-term cooperation between the concerned parties.
The cooperation is not only aimed at expanding production capacity; BYD wants to establish a real knowledge center in Szeged.
As part of the program, the company will provide practical training opportunities for students in vocational and higher education, as well as professional training for recent graduates.
In the coming years, BYD intends to create career opportunities for hundreds of talented young people in Szeged. The company wants those participating in the training to acquire up-to-date knowledge and skills, said the director. Mr. Gan emphasized that
BYD is committed to continuous development and intends to make the latest industry knowledge available to as many people as possible.
They believe that Szeged and its region can play a prominent role in Hungary’s development, he added.
László Salgó, county government commissioner of the Csongrád-Csanád County Government Office, said that the construction of BYD’s car factory in Szeged is the largest investment in the Southern Great Plain. The electric car manufacturing plant will employ around 10,000 specialists, making the company one of the largest employers in the region, with a workforce comparable only to that of the University of Szeged. BYD is committed to employing Hungarian workers at its Szeged plant. To this end, consultations have begun between the company, the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, the University of Szeged, and regional vocational training centers, which have resulted in an agreement, Mr. Salgó underlined.
