Bulgaria Pledges to Remain a Reliable Gas Transit Partner

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.04.23.

Bulgaria plays an indispensable role in the security of Hungary’s natural gas supply, and the country will continue to be a reliable transit partner for Hungary in the future, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó wrote on Facebook on Tuesday, following talks with Bulgaria’s Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov.

“We highly appreciate the responsible attitude of the current Bulgarian government in this matter and it is reassuring that the Minister assured us again today that Bulgaria will continue to be a reliable transit partner for Hungary in the future,” Péter Szijjártó said.

We need all this, as more than 20 million cubic meters of natural gas arrive in Hungary every day via Bulgaria, and this year the volume transported via the TurkStream pipeline exceeded 2.3 billion cubic meters,”

he pointed out.

The Hungarian politician stressed that a significant increase in the capacity of gas pipelines in South-Eastern Europe is needed to diversify the energy supply of Central Europe in this respect.

The news I have received from my colleague is excellent, as Bulgaria will significantly increase the capacity of its gas pipelines in the framework of the Vertical Corridor project,”

he noted.

“We agreed that the European Union should also play a role in ensuring energy security in the region, and we will further strengthen our regional energy cooperation to this end,” the Minister added.
