“A major battle is expected at next week’s meeting of the European Union’s Energy Council, but the government will not allow Brussels to collect money from Hungarian families to finance the prolongation of the war in Ukraine,” Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Minister reported that on Monday in Luxembourg, the Energy Council will discuss “the Von der Leyen-Zelenskyy proposal, which aims to force us to stop buying natural gas, crude oil, and nuclear fuel from Russia.“
Brussels wants to support Ukraine by doubling or tripling the utility costs of Hungarian families. But we will not allow Hungarian families to foot the bill for prolonging the war in Ukraine!”
he stated.
He then announced that he had consulted with his Slovak counterpart, Juraj Blanár, and they agreed that such a gross violation of sovereignty was unacceptable.
The formulation of national energy policy is a matter of sovereignty, and no one from outside can interfere in it,”
he emphasized, then added: “We are not willing to replace our existing energy sources with more expensive and less reliable ones for the sake of Brussels or Kyiv!”
