Holidu, the search engine for holiday rentals, has put together a list of the must-visit European cities for 2022. After analyzing Google searches from the past 12 months, the ranking reveals the cities that people are most eager to visit. Budapest ranks fifth on the list.
The Hungarian capital is fifth on the list with 32,500 searches per month. Holidu writes the following about the city:
“The fifth most popular European city break destination this year is Budapest. The capital city of Hungary, Budapest is a popular spot due to its rich culture and for being the Spa Capital of the World! Visitors often go especially to visit one of the many spa baths, the best and largest being Széchenyi Spa Baths, which hosts 15 indoor baths and 3 grand outdoor pools. Aside from the baths, Budapest is also famous for its Ruin Bars, a collection of bars that are located inside abandoned buildings and are decorated with colorful graffiti and plants.”
the following about the methodology: “The 300 most populous cities in Europe were considered for this study. British cities were omitted in order to have a mainland European and non-staycation-based ranking. The ranking was then drawn up using the average number of monthly searches on Google in the last 12 months for each of the city names combined with the following keywords: ‘things to do in,’ ‘city break,’ and ‘flights to’ in order to determine which destinations were most popular with and sought after by travelers.
Ahead of Budapest on the list are: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, and Paris.
The other cities ranked after Hungary’s capital are Rome, Prague, Malaga, Berlin, and Lisbon.
Last year, The Guardian recommended Budapest as a winter holiday destination and it also emphasized the city’s spas. The capital’s District XI was also listed among the world’s coolest neighborhoods.
