The cleaning of the ponds on Margaret Island and the stream that connects them has been underway for weeks, and one of the biggest challenges for the gardeners has been saving the fish. Since the pond in the Japanese Garden on Margaret Island had to be drained for the cleanup, the fish were relocated to the pond in Budapest City Park.
However, on Wednesday, a chemical of unknown origin and composition was poured into the water, killing all the fish, they said. They added that some turtles survived the poisoning, but it is not yet known what condition they are in.
