A live load test was carried out on the newly asphalted Chain Bridge in Budapest on Sunday, with twenty-four 20-tonne trucks lined up throughout. This brings Budapest citizens closer yet to the date when they can once again take possession of the capital’s historic bridge.
According to the Center for Budapest Transport, primary data showed that the bridge performed well under the test load, with the values measured at the time of loading matching the values calculated by the experts. According to the statement, the renovation of the Chain Bridge remains on schedule and within budget. The bridge deck will be back in use by mid-December, but work on the pavements and underpasses will continue into next year.
Intensive work on the Chain Bridge will continue until the autumn of 2023, when the technical handover of the entire bridge will take place. Overall, the renovation will take two and a half years, with the multi-billion forint works being carried out by A-Híd Zrt.
The question remains to what extent the bridge, which has a long history, will be connected to traffic after the renovation. Many people support the idea of reopening it only before public transport. Pedestrian traffic is not an issue, and the iconic stone lions are finally in their place again – recently restored and rejuvenated.
