The long-awaited time has come for the people of Budapest: from Friday, they will be able to use the long-under-renovation Chain Bridge again. The jewel of the capital has been under renovation for more than a year.
Gergely Karácsony, the Mayor of Budapest, announced on his Facebook page that the Chain Bridge will be open to traffic again on Friday. Initially, cyclists, taxis, and buses will be able to cross the bridge, but the final traffic regime is still subject to change, and the capital will decide at the end of 2023 who will be able to use the bridge.
The reason for the limited traffic is that the bridge has only one lane on each side. As a result, traffic on the bridge is often blocked during rush hour, making it unusable for motorists and public transport. Many expect the new traffic rules to end the huge traffic jams.
The renovation of the Chain Bridge started in spring 2021, and is expected to be finalized in 2023. The gross cost of the renovation is HUF 26.75 billion (EUR 65 million).
