Negotiations on the reacquisition of Liszt Ferenc International Airport are already at a stage where a final agreement between the involved actors is very close, the Ministry of National Economy, led by Márton Nagy, told ATV.

According to the ministry’s statement, “the airport is an outstanding strategic asset,” the repurchase is of

economic historical significance, as it is the largest in volume and most complex transaction since the 1989 regime change.”

On the acquisition of Budapest Airport, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at his international press conference on December 21, 2023 that he

considers it (the transaction) a done deal, despite the fact that only the technical details need to be finalized.”

The Hungarian state made a bid for a majority 51 percent stake in Budapest Airport in the summer, and the purchase price was reported at the time to be between EUR 2-3 billion. It is possible that the Qatar Investment Authority will join the deal as a financial or strategic investor and a third terminal could be built. The Qatari investment was announced by the prime minister at the Qatar Economic Forum last May. He said he was “seeing interest from Qatar” in Budapest Airport and “Hungary would welcome them.”

Fact

As we reported earlier, the state will sell its stake in the mobile phone operator Yettel Hungary. The revenue will be used to buy Budapest Airport. Following the transaction, the government will continue to participate in the strategically important telecoms sector through a cooperation agreement with Magyar Telekom and Vodafone.
