In Italy, a new technology designed to simplify, secure, and speed up procedures at airports is already being tested, allowing passengers to pass through security checks using only facial recognition. Világgazdaság was curious to know whether Budapest Airport also plans to introduce these so-called FaceBoarding systems, therefore it contacted the airport operator.
“Budapest Airport regularly monitors and follows the latest industry trends and technologies, and strives to introduce the best solutions to make airport processes as convenient as possible for passengers. Thanks to previous technological advances, laptops and larger electronic devices such as tablets, cameras, or hairdryers can remain in hand luggage during screening. In addition, Budapest Airport has already tested CT equipment with technology that allows for the efficient screening of liquids larger than 10 times 100 milliliters. The airport operator plans to introduce the use of this equipment as a first step with the opening of Terminal 1,” replied the airport operator.
In its reply, Budapest Airport added:
Preparations for testing a system similar to the one mentioned in the inquiry are expected in the next period.”
Designed to simplify, secure, and expedite airport travel, FaceBoarding is a biometric system that allows passengers to pass through security checks and boarding gates using only facial recognition. In order to use FaceBoarding, passengers need to register at the airport or via an app. The app is expected to be launched in June.
Euronews reports that until December 31, 2025, everyone will be able to decide for themselves whether to register for only one or all flights.
This technology could be a game changer for air passenger transport, as passengers can pass through boarding gates without having to show proof of identity or a boarding pass, significantly reducing waiting times at airports.
The new system uses biometric recognition software designed by the French IT company Thales and security gates from Dormakaba in Switzerland. For the time being, FaceBoarding is only available to people over 18 years old and is being tested at Milan Linate and Catania airports in Italy. Those who do not wish to use the innovation will be able to go through security and boarding as usual.
